PrinterOn Simplifies Printing for Higher Education

Kitchener, ON - April 5, 2005: PrinterOn has launched the Campus Printing System to simplify PC and wireless laptop printing for university and college students. The Intranet printing solution provides students with access to campus printers from any location, while reducing the help desk support burden.

Schools that deploy 802.11x wireless access points can now round out their service by extending wireless printing privileges to both students and faculty. As more and more students cut the cord and work untethered, the need to easily print documents becomes crucial. The Campus Printing System is ideal for use in libraries, computing labs, residences, print centers and common areas, and supports network topologies that are problematic for traditional printing solutions.

For students, the Campus Printing System provides ease of use through features such as printer discovery and description, automated setup and configuration, confirmation of page counts and prices, and a Web-based solution that allows printing without installing any software or print drivers.

IT support staff also benefit from the solution. Ease of use for students dramatically reduces the number of support incidents to help students set up and manage their print drivers. Centralized management ensures that all changes to print configuration are automatically reflected to all users. The Campus Printing System is also compatible with most print management solutions for end-to-end simplicity combined with cost recovery.

The system provides two basic means of printing - a Web service for printing without print drivers, and PrintWhere, a universal print driver that supports all printers with a single install. Both interfaces share common configuration and access management, allowing them to be used interchangeably. An email interface is also available for students who need to print messages and document attachments from wireless handheld devices such as a BlackBerry® or Treo™.

The Web interface supports a wide range of document types, and allows the students to print documents and Web pages without installing software on their computer. PrintWhere - the universal print driver - supports any Windows application and is ideal for frequent users and students with advanced print requirements.

The Campus Printing System is proven technology, currently being used by itself or with print management systems such as Pharos, Equitrac, PCOUNTER and VendPrint. The solution is deployed at diverse locations such as the University of Western Ontario, Barry University (Florida), Georgia Perimeter Institute (Georgia), Queens University (Ontario) and Pepperdine Law School (London, UK).

Benefits of Campus Printing System for Higher Education:

  • Reduce IT staff support cost by providing students and library users with printing solutions that do not require configuration assistance.

  • Facilitate printing in an 802.11b environment. With Web services, a single print driver from PrinterOn automatically reconfigures for accurate and "zero support" use of printing services.

  • Works with existing student payment systems such as print management solutions for cost recovery. User privacy and campus "Print Less" initiatives are also compatible with PrinterOn solutions.

  • Print from residence. Students can use the library laser printing resources from their residence, and collect the print jobs in the library.

  • Print from home to the campus. Students can submit print requests from home for laser printing in the library, and pick up their print jobs when they visit campus.

  • No print driver. Simply upload a document, select print options, and pick up your document from the print release station.
